Youth & Young Adult Group

Sunday Morning Program The youth gather in the Sanctuary at 10 a.m. for the beginning of the worship service and then proceed downstairs to the recently renovated youth room for their own programming. Together we explore biblical stories and engage in discussions and activities that connect with daily living. There is avid discussions around topics that are of direct concern, "If God knows how I feel, why do I need to pray?" "Did Jesus ever get angry?" "My dog died on Good Friday. Did my dog die for all dog’s sins?" We don’t always have answers to our questions but we never cease to discover new things about the wonder and mystery of God and each other.

Youth also participate in the worshiping community by creating and presenting dramas, reading scripture, offering reflections, exhibiting their artwork, and sharing their musical talents.

Outreach Activities The youth are actively engaged in living out their faith in concrete ways. They preparing soup for Soup Sunday at the church, hold an annual Garage Sale to raise funds for various causes, serving breakfast at Surrey Urban Mission, filling socks for a “Warm Feet for the Street” program that is also connect with the Surrey Urban Mission, and help Crescent’s Environmental group with a street cleanup project. Older youth have the option to prepare for, and participate in, a trip to El Salvador with others from the congregation to visit our sister community. Walking the talk is core to our faith development.

Faith Quest This program is designed to engage youth in learning more about their faith, the United Church of Canada, and what it means to be a member of a faith community. “Who wants to be a biblical scholar”, “Who wants to be a church geek” are favored components of this program as is the pizza shared at lunch. The conversation is always lively and wide ranging. At the completion of Faith Quest those interested in confirmation are confirmed as full members in the United Church of Canada. Check out the church calendar for programming dates.

Graduation Acknowledgement Each May during a worship service we take time to acknowledge and bless those who are graduating. Celebrating life’s important rituals within the faith community contributes to the ways in which we care for one another. Whether you are graduating from high school, college, or university you’ve reached an important milestone that we’re pleased to celebrate with you.

May Retreat
We encourage interested youth to attend this weekend retreat with others from the wider church community. The retreat is held at Cultus Lake United Church Camp and includes plenty of opportunities for meeting new friends, deepening one’s faith, eating, dancing and generally having a great time. Funding is available to help with the costs of participation in this event.
