Our Purpose: |
In the United Church, as in its parent denominations, women’s groups have been and continue to be, an essential and integral part of congregational life and mission. On one level there has been the evident and important role of helping to provide congregational food and fellowship; but more fundamentally, within the United Church tradition women’s groups have been a place of nurture and empowerment for women denied their rightful place in the larger society. The United Church was one of the first major Church denominations in North America to ordain women to its ministry, and ultimately to its highest elected office. It was the women’s groups that primarily initiated and supported the church’s mission education programs. From their worship and study has come much of the social justice passion which is a hallmark of the United Church.
Within the congregational units of the United Church Women women have
found opportunity for nurture, growth, sometimes refuge, and the
development of lasting personal friendships. It is from such fellowships
that much of the church’s caring pastoral ministry is enabled to evolve
and be fulfilled. |
