"The waters of life may be free" observed the wise old preacher "but somebody's got to pay for the piping." It's about giving back from the bounty one has received. The standard of the Biblical tithe was 10%, giving back for service to others one-tenth of one's income. Whatever standard one adopts, churches need buildings and facilities from and in which to carry out their activities. They also need trained, competent leadership and staff. So over and above the volunteering of their time and talents, Christians also support their church monetarily. These gifts of money need to be wisely administered, staff remunerated, and property facilities responsibly maintained. Such is the task of the congregation's Property and Finance Committees. |
