The United Church is an amalgam of three major church traditions - Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational. Elements of each are found in its personnel practices and procedures. The national church (General Council) sets the qualifying standards and pay scales for its ordered ministry. The regional body (i.e. BC Conference) ordains and designates those who thus qualify. From these the congregation (eg. Crescent UCC) can select and call who it wills to "paid accountable ministry". The presbytery (i.e. Fraser Presbytery) then appoints and supervises such personnel. Most congregations also have a range of other, often part-time, associate staff in areas such as administration, care-taking, music, pastoral care, Christian development, etc. Making sense of all this and ensuring that the needs and rights of both the congregation's paid personnel and the congregation are met, is the task of the congregation's ministry and personnel committee. |
