Baptism is the church rite acknowledging membership in the Christian community. In its fullest sense it is the result of an intentional act of will by the person thus seeking church membership. Infant baptism acknowledges the oneness of the family unit whereby Christian parents affirm that they wish their children also to be part of their church family. It is an act that is then ‘completed’ in later years (normally in the teen years in the Protestant tradition) by a conscious act of Confirmation on the part of the maturing child. By their very nature, both Baptism and Confirmation in the Protestant tradition are communal events, involving action by the receiving congregation to welcome the new members into their midst.
